How many days to spend in Mykonos, with ready-made 3, 4 and 5-day itineraries covering the beaches, town, Delos and the island's best tables.
How long does Mykonos actually need?
Three to five days is the range that suits most visitors. Fewer than three days and you will feel rushed; more than five and, unless you are genuinely committed to the beach-club lifestyle, you may find yourself wondering what is left to do. The sweet spot for a first visit is four days — enough to cover the essentials without padding.
Below are realistic day-by-day itineraries you can adapt. For context on timing, pair this with our best time to visit Mykonos guide.
3-day itinerary: the long weekend
A long weekend works well if you fly in Thursday evening or Friday morning and leave Sunday night or Monday.
Day 1 — Arrive and explore Chora
Check in, drop your bags and head straight into Mykonos Town. Spend the afternoon on foot: the winding lanes around Matogianni Street, Little Venice and the windmills are compact enough to cover in two or three hours. Grab a coffee, pick up your bearings and book dinner for the evenings ahead (necessary in high season). End the day with sunset drinks at 180 Sunset Bar — the view over the windmills is one of the island's defining moments.
Day 2 — Beach day
Head to the beach. For a first visit, Ornos Beach is a good anchor: calm water, easy access, family-friendly, with good tavernas nearby. Alternatively, if you are drawn to the beach-club scene, book a sun-lounger at Super Paradise Beach Club or Nammos — both are livelier and pricier but genuinely impressive. Return to town in the early evening and dine at Kavos Taverna for something more laid-back and local.
Day 3 — Delos day trip, then farewell dinner
The early morning ferry to Delos departs from the Old Port and the crossing takes about 30 minutes. Allow three to four hours on the island — the ruins of the ancient sanctuary, the Terrace of the Lions and the mosaics of the House of Dionysos are highlights. Return by early afternoon, have a long lunch, and spend the final evening enjoying Chora at a slower pace. See our day trips from Mykonos guide for Delos ferry details and tips.
4-day itinerary: the recommended first visit
Four days lets you add a second beach, an extra evening out and a more relaxed pace throughout.
Day 1 — Town and windmills
As above: arrive, settle in, walk Chora, catch sunset at the windmills. Dinner in town.
Day 2 — South-coast beaches
Spend the morning at a quieter beach — Ornos or Principote — then migrate to a beach club in the afternoon if that appeals. Scorpios Mykonos on Paraga beach is worth a visit for its atmosphere and food even outside of evening events.
Day 3 — Delos day trip
Full Delos morning as outlined above. Afternoon back on the island for a swim or a nap. Evening: book a table somewhere special for dinner, then explore Chora's nightlife at your own pace.
Day 4 — Second beach + slow day
Try a beach you have not visited yet. Venture to one of the more remote spots — a rental scooter or ATV makes this easy (see getting around Mykonos and our essentials page for rental tips). Afternoon at leisure, then depart or spend a final relaxed evening in town.
5-day itinerary: time to breathe
Five days is ideal if you want to genuinely unwind rather than tick boxes.
Days 1–4 — Follow the 4-day plan above
Use those days for the core experiences: Chora, beaches, Delos, dining.
Day 5 — Explore at your own pace
With an extra day, you can:
- Hire a scooter or ATV and reach the island's quieter northern and eastern beaches, which most short-stay visitors never see
- Return to a favourite beach and do nothing in particular
- Take an afternoon boat trip around the island
- If you are staying somewhere like Saint John Hotel Villas & Spa, use the property's facilities properly — pool, spa, the beach below — rather than rushing off somewhere
Five days also gives you a buffer if ferry schedules, weather or late nights shift your plans. On a short trip, those disruptions eat into your itinerary; with five days, they rarely matter.
Practical notes for planning
- Book ahead. Restaurants and beach clubs fill up quickly in June–August. Plan your evenings before you arrive.
- Delos runs to a schedule. Ferries typically depart in the morning and return in the early afternoon. Check current departure times at the Old Port.
- Stay central for a short trip. If you only have three days, staying in or near Chora means you spend time on the island rather than in taxis. Read our where to stay guide for area advice.
- Factor in travel days. If you are flying from outside Europe, a travel day on each end eats into a short trip fast. Four or five nights feels more realistic than three in that case.
Frequently asked questions
Is three days enough for Mykonos? Three days covers the essentials — Chora and the windmills, at least one beach day and a Delos trip — if you plan carefully. It feels rushed in peak season when restaurant waits and ferry queues take up more time. For a first visit, four days is a more comfortable target.
Can you do Mykonos in a day? As a cruise stop or a day trip from another island, yes — you can see the windmills, walk Chora and have a meal. But you will miss the beaches entirely and get only a surface impression of the island. A minimum overnight stay changes the experience significantly.
How many days in Mykonos is ideal for a honeymoon or romantic trip? Five days works well for couples who want to balance beach time, nice dinners, exploring the town and a day on Delos without rushing. Properties like Myconian Avaton and Cavo Tagoo are designed for slow, indulgent stays — book enough nights to actually enjoy them.
